1. From baptism to temptation. Luke 4:1-2 “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.”
A. The Spirit led Jesus out to be tempted by the devil. What purpose does this serve?
B. Jesus’ temptations exemplify the temptations we face. However, there are also important differences.
2. The devils lie. You can’t trust God’s Provision. “The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” (Luke 4:3)
A. There had been other temptations during the forty days. The devil was patient and strategic, he waited until Jesus was extremely hungry. Jesus first temptation is basic and relevant aimed at His humanity.
B. Jesus response, “It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone.” Verse 4
3. The devils lie. You can’t trust God’s Promises. “The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.” Luke 4:5
A. This is obviously a vision for there is no mountain upon which all of the nations of the world can be seen.
B. Jesus response, “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” Verse 8
4. The devils lie. You cant’ trust God’s Protection. “The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here.” Luke 4:9
A. Jesus uses scripture so the devil does the same. Quoting part of Psalm 91 is more than the devil questioning Jesus’ deity. The devil questioning God the Father, His love and protection.
B. Jesus response, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Verse 12
5. The devils lie. You can trust he’s not done causing Problems. “When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” Luke 4:13
A. The devil ran out of suggestive lies and deceptions for now. He will patiently wait for an opportune time.
