- We are to pay attention to the Psalmist. Verse 1 “Listen, my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.” A. The Psalmist is speaking, but he is speaking for the Lord. You can sense the urgency he feels. We are to listen intently to God’s instruction and word to His people.
- We are to remember the past. Verses 2-3 “I will open my mouth in a parable; I will tell riddles of old, Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us.” A. Explaining the history of God’s dealings with His people, needs to be repeated and remembered.
- Teaching about the greatness of God is to be a priority. Vs 4 “We will not conceal them from their children, But we will tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His power and His wondrous works that He has done.” A. We will tell our children that our God is worthy of praise. B. We will tell our children that our God is powerful. C. We will tell our children about God’s providence.
- We will teach our children the Pentateuch. Verses 5-7 “For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they were to teach them to their children, So that the generation to come would know, the children yet to be born, That they would arise and tell them to their children, So that they would put their confidence in God And not forget the works of God, But comply with His commandments” A. The Pentateuch is the first five books in the bible. We have to be committed to teaching our children to know the Lord and have confidence in His Word.
- So we do not repeat the past. “And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God.” A. We can learn from the past or repeat it.
