1. Consult God’s Word. (Colossians 1:9b)
“...We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.”
A. Known will – His commands stated clearly.
“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 517
B. Inferred will – principles in Gods word (good, pleasing, perfect)
C. Unknown will - Joseph did not understand the will of God in His life until later when he looked back over the events of his life. Genesis 50:20
2. Counsel of Godly people. (Proverbs 12:15)
“The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.”
A. Get feed back from a mature believer especially someone who has made a similar decision. When possible have others confirm your decision. (Proverbs 11:14)
B. Pray for guidance – Seek His will and understanding. “Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:6
3. Caution and discernment is required. (Proverbs 14:8)
“The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.”
A. Get as much information as possible, this is foundational to critical thinking.
B. Learn from others mistakes. "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." Hebrews 5:14
4. Count the cost. (I Corinthians 6:12)
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.”
A. Every decision has a cost. It will cost you time, money, reputation, talents, or resources.
5. Confirmation of peace. (II Thessalonians 3:16)
“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”
A. You should have a sense of peace about your decision.
B. Don’t procrastinate because of fear. Proverbs 24:16
